During a challenging time, I found myself confined to a recovery home, relying on others for the first time. Being critically ill forced me to slow down and reflect on the little things, and as I lay in bed, receiving fluids and antibiotics, I became more aware of my surroundings than ever before.

One of the people who stood out to me was a housekeeper—an elderly lady who didn’t speak English but who showed up every morning at 6:30. She’d sneak into my room as quietly as she could to avoid disturbing me. Yet, each time, I would wake up just in time to see her warm smile as she tried to apologize for being there. Her smile was something I started looking forward to every morning, a small but meaningful gesture that brought a ray of light to my days.
